WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RAW HAIR AND VIRGIN HAIR?

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RAW HAIR AND VIRGIN HAIR?

Hi, and welcome back to this week’s blog post!

This week, we’re talking about one of the biggest misconceptions in the hair extension industry: Raw Hair vs. Virgin Hair. Growing up, most of us were taught to look for the term “Virgin Hair” when shopping for extensions. It was considered the gold standard and an indicator of high quality hair.

However, over the last five years or so, Raw Hair has become increasingly popular, while Virgin Hair has almost become a dirty word. But here’s the thing, a lot of the hair being marketed as “Raw Hair” is actually Virgin Hair.

So, let’s break down the difference.

What is Raw Hair?

Raw Hair is hair that has not been altered in any way to change its natural color or texture. It is collected from one donor, washed, conditioned, and made into extensions.

Raw Hair is typically single-donor hair with the cuticles aligned and intact, which can contribute to its longevity and reduce the likelihood of tangling when properly cared for.

Because the hair has not been altered to create a specific texture, no two bundles are necessarily going to look exactly the same.

Raw Hair only comes in three textures:

  • Straight

  • Wavy

  • Curly

The exact pattern, however, varies from donor to donor.

What is Virgin Hair?

Virgin Hair is also hair that has not been chemically processed, but it can be altered through methods such as steaming to create a specific texture or curl pattern.

Think:

  • Body Wave

  • Deep Curly

  • Burmese Curly

  • Kinky Straight

  • And many other textures

Essentially, the hair starts in its natural state but is altered to achieve a desired appearance. This results in each bundle looking the same.

Virgin Hair can still be single-donor and have its cuticles intact. However, the term “Virgin Hair” alone does not necessarily tell you whether the hair is single-donor or how the cuticles have been handled. And unlike Raw Hair, there are virtually no limits to the textures that can be created through processing methods such as steaming.

So…Which One Is Better?

This is probably the question you really want answered.

And honestly? It depends on what you’re looking for.

Personally, I love Virgin Hair because I love having options. I can go from wavy to curly to kinky straight without having to compromise on the look I want. That flexibility is one of the biggest advantages of Virgin Hair.

However, there is a downside.

Some companies will strip the cuticle layer from the hair and coat it with silicone to create that instantly soft, shiny feeling. The problem? After several wears and washes, that silicone coating can wear away, potentially revealing hair that tangles and mats much more easily.

This is one of the reasons why the term “Virgin Hair” alone isn't enough to determine quality.

With properly sourced Raw Hair, the cuticles are preserved and aligned, which can contribute to better longevity.

But Raw Hair has its own trade-offs. Because each donor's hair is naturally unique, you don't necessarily get perfectly uniform curls from bundle to bundle. For some people, that's exactly what they love about Raw Hair. It gives the hair a more natural, lived-in appearance.

For others, especially if you want a very specific and consistent curl pattern, that individuality can be a downside.

What About Longevity?

Raw Hair is generally considered the premium option, and the price tag usually reflects that.

Because Raw Hair hasn't undergone the same textural processing as Virgin Hair, it has the potential to last longer. Virgin Hair can also last for years, but the longevity can be affected by the steaming process.

As a general guideline, you may see Raw Hair lasting 3–5+ years with proper care, while Virgin Hair may last 1–3+ years depending on the quality and with proper care.

These aren't guarantees, though. The quality of the original hair and how you care for it ultimately matters more.

In short, Raw Hair is not automatically "better" than Virgin Hair & Vice Versa

Raw Hair is better if you want:
• Maximum longevity
• Natural variation from bundle to bundle
• Hair that stays closer to its original state
• A premium, one of a kind look

Virgin Hair is better if you want:
• More texture options
• Consistency between bundles
• Specific curl or wave patterns
• More flexibility in the look you want

The biggest takeaway?

Don't let the word “Raw” convince you that something is automatically better. Do your research, some bundles labeled as Raw Hair are not Raw Hair. Also don't let the word “Virgin” convince you that something is automatically lower quality.

The sourcing, processing, cuticle integrity, and overall quality of the hair matter.

At the end of the day, its about understanding which extensions will better fit your hair needs
